Ca indiferent ce stereotip, stereotipul gotic e exagerat intr-o privinta si multi oameni nu sunt chiar asa de monodimensionali. Goticii au o varietate de preocupari, gusturi si trecuturi. De cele mai numeroase ori stereotipurile sunt create pentru a face misto de cineva, astfel ca nu sunt prea multi gotici care sa se potriveasca acestui stereotip.
Trei cuvinte rezuma cel mai bine stereotipul gotic: moarte, ambitie si spleen-ul. Goticii tipici poarta intotdeauna haine negre, din cand in cand albe si niciodata alte culori. Au parul vopsit in negru, unghii negre, fond de ten alb, machiaj obscur la ochi si ruj negru. Le place sa se imbrace ca vampirii sau sa se poarte ca atare. Au preferinta pentru sange, moarte, sicrie, lilieci, cranii, plase de paianjeni si tot felul de ciudatenii. Nu vor purta niciodata jeansi si tricouri si niciodata nu vor iesi in public nemachiati.
Sunt excesiv de vanitosi si cand vor merge sa danseze se vor holba la propria fotografie din oglinda. Petrec ore intregi realizandu-si machiajul, la fiecare 10 minute vor verifica daca nu s-a scurs. Sufera, de întocmai de sindromul persecutiei. Insulta si judeca goticii tineri care nu sunt ca ei, dar se supara cand o persoana normala le face observatie. Nu zambesc niciodata si cugeta intruna. Scriu poezii slabe despre spleen, vampiri sau tragedii. Beau cafea, evita soarele si fumeaza doar tigari subtiri. Nu asculta altceva decat muzica gotica. Isi petrec timpul in jurul cimitirelor sau la cafenea toata ziua. Lucreaza, daca lucreaza, la fast-food-uri sau in telemarketing. Iau viata si pe ei insasi deosebit de in serios si sunt in dispoziție sa faca din tantar armasar. Petrec foarte mult timp uitandu-se la "The Crow" si citesc intruna "Interviu cu un vampir".
O foarte buna descriere a stereotipului gotic este realizata de Type O Negative in piesa "Black no. 1(Little Miss Scare All)":
